At OLSPS Workforce, a next generation workforce tool called PROPEL has been carefully engineered and deployed over the past decade. PROPEL uses a sophisticated series of algorithms, un-gameable surveys and decades of behavioural science expertise to scientifically measure the inherent employee behavioural framework and links it directly to KPIs and other key business outcomes.

Tyler Donaldson, Lead Data Scientist, OLSPS

The PROPEL journey started almost a decade ago, as an ambitious idea to shift from the soft and subjective nature of cultural and behavioural management to an approach centred in hard analytics. As it turned out, this was an extensive analytical challenge, taking years of real-world development to get right. Today, PROPEL has been a success story in major companies across Australia, and is now taking hold in South Africa.

Is there really value in analysing Mindsets & Behaviours in the workplace?

PROPEL has shown that Mindsets & Behaviours explain as much as 40% of KPI performance in non-trivial roles. That’s a 40% information edge; to inform leadership and align efforts, at scale, in an area that was previously unquantifiable. Moreover, PROPEL addresses the ‘drivers’ of performance, over and above outcome-driven management tools such as KPIs.

One of the advantages of developing the solution in-house was that OLSPS Workforce could be developed from a data science perspective. The entire process from initial data capture, survey management, optimisations, dashboards, mailers and analytical modelling is all driven from a perfectly relational database. This means there is inherently 100% data integrity, and the content of any part of any survey or surrounding process is driven through the database. This in turn can be easily deployed and managed in a cloud environment, making PROPEL very accessible.

As the development methodology is entirely data-centric, every angle of the process can be queried in relation to every other angle, and every possible question is available to be answered through analytical interrogation.

The resulting analytics is wide and complex. Running through the analytical process entails several thousand operations, and several hundred thousand data points, to produce the final, robust set of scores and custom predictive models. Several analytical models are run and considered in a champion/challenger methodology; and non-performance modelling, such as K-Means clustering, provides further lenses for interrogation.

PROPEL has long since established a successful footprint across the business banking sector in Australia. The data-centric nature of this industry has allowed for accelerated, real-time development. To date, PROPEL has shown tens of millions of dollars in ROI. Moreover, it has become an integral, statistically relevant source of insight for leadership, into the key Mindsets & Behaviours that drive banking performance.

As PROPEL begins to take hold in South Africa it is well poised to be a valuable, affordable and highly accessible solution for just about any business. For any organisation trying to impact culture or performance through machine learning, PROPEL provides hard insights into the untapped world of Mindsets & Behaviours.

PROPEL will be showcased at the AI Expo on 4-5th September in Cape Town. To better understand how PROPEL can benefit your organisation, get in touch with the team at OLSPS.
