South African based, AI Media Group – organisers of Africa’s largest AI Business Event (AI Expo Africa) – and the Alliance 4 AI, Africa’s leading pan-African impact community, to co-operate to curate the African presence at the AI for Good Global Summit, Geneva, 4th-8th May 2020.

It is becoming clearer to the world that we can only achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 if the innovative voices of those in Africa, who are most affected by the challenges, are involved.  This is a clarion call for the rise of Africa’s innovative voice for the fourth industrial revolution.

Alex Tsado, Director at the Alliance 4 AI stated, “Africa needs to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) now for two key reasons; For Africa, AI represents access, efficiency and a potential antidote to unemployment and underdevelopment. By 2030, it’ll be home to 46% of the world’s youth. The continent’s rapid population growth means we have to think critically about the future of work. Secondly, its annual infrastructure spend gap is US$100-billion. It can benefit immensely from lowering these costs with transformational technologies like AI”.

To maximize the effectiveness of limited resources, every organisation and government seeking to meet its population’s needs should consider the power of AI to render their efforts more likely to succeed. For example, governments can distribute the limited fertilisers they purchase to the exact farmers that need them or distribute medical drugs to the right patient populations. Companies with small budgets can adequately market to the right customers, sell more and grow their business to finally be able to create jobs for Africans.  In addition, Africa is perhaps the continent with the greatest diversity of data and use cases to feed the design of AI solutions that can be applied in most parts of the world.

Nick Bradshaw, Director at the AI Media Group stated, “For the first time, Africa’s artificial intelligence community will be represented more broadly at the AI for Good Global Summit.  The Alliance 4 AI and the AI Media Group are partnering to design the Africa Pavilion, showcasing globally relevant solutions built in Africa by Africa’s top innovators, it’s really exciting that Africa is going to have a much more significant profile at the event this year.”

Alliance 4 AI, AI Media Group, AI for Development and Data Science Nigeria are just some of the organisations pooling together resources to galvanise interest and activate African luminaries solving problems with the technology. So far, these organisations reached over 25,000 Africans in 2019.

Some of the highlights the African delegation will engage in at the event include;

  • Keynote addresses speaking to the importance of Africa’s innovative voice that seek to drive inclusion in AI,
  • A speech by South Africa’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams
  • Talks on data centre and supercomputer projects being developed in Africa to power world-class innovation,
  • Learnings and insights from top AI startups and AI training communities in Africa,
  • Demonstrations from top researchers addressing critical issues such as the fight against Malaria,
  • Preserving African languages and culture, creating a template of innovation and collaboration for other low-resource languages to be represented.

Tsado concluded, “For us, the future couldn’t be brighter.  We are heading to Geneva together to share our solutions, form partnerships and collaborate as we collectively march towards 2030’s development goals.  A successful and empowered Africa is one that is an exporter of knowledge and solutions to the world, and we will all be better for it”.
